HC summons Gaibandha DC Staff Correspondent

The High Court yesterday summoned the deputy commissioner (DC) of Gaibandha and two others in connection with a reported incident that a Union Parishad chairman has recently conducted a "court" at his village in the district with himself being the judge.

The court asked Golam Sadek alias Lebu, the chairman of Gidari union who allegedly ran the court, the Thana Nirbahi Officer (TNO) of Gaibandha sadar, and the DC to appear before it on January 12.

The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim passed the order on a suo moto move after the daily Prothom Alo published a report on January 8, headlined “A chairman's own court”.

The report says Golam Sadek runs a court at his village where the litigants are to file cases with fees and appoint lawyers. The chairman himself is the judge of the court.
